The Scottish Shetland Pony Championship Show 2020

Clibberswick Lancelot

The thought crossed my mind to re-invent the Scottish Shetland Pony Championship Show. It was originally the inception of Dougal Dick of the Transy Stud over a decade ago and I think it is time it was brought back to life. Whilst there are a few end of Season Championship shows in Scotland very few Shetland Ponies attend them. I think this is mainly due to the classes being mixed M&M Small breed classes where the Shetlands are in with the Dartmoors, Exmoors, Welsh A's & B's as well as the fact that they are unaffiliated. So very few Shetland Pony people have had the chance to experience an evening performance and all the glitz, glam and glitter that goes with it! This is where I step in.

The idea of this show is to give the Shetlands their chance in the spotlight. With a selection of inhand and ridden classes during the morning the plan is to hold all of the Championships in the Evening Performance - Don't worry! It won't be late in the evening! To encourage everyone to stay the Championships will start 30-45 minutes after the last class giving competitors and judges the time to get changed but without dragging the day out. Whether they start at 3pm or 6pm it will be shortly after the completion of the day classes.

This show will be a qualifier only show. I am hoping shows from the North of England, throughout Scotland and the Islands all the way up to Shetland will hold qualifiers so we can have a hugely diverse range of competitors forward on the day. The first 3 in each class will qualify for the show. This means that once your pony has qualified you can enter any class you pony is suitable for. The Young Handler classes can be done with any qualified pony.

This show is still very much in the planning stage. We have a provisional Date and Venue - Saturday 19th September at Howe Equestrian Centre in Fife. This means that flu vaccinations will be compulsory. There is plenty of stabling at the venue should you wish to stay over and it is ran by Tom Myles of the Highfield Stud so he has plenty of experience of Shetland Ponies and their antics! The show will be held indoors so no matter what the weather is doing outside there is no fear of getting soaking wet!

If you have any suggestions please so comment and let me know. It is not always possible to accommodate every request but we will try out best!
